After tasting Emirates FA Cup disappointment in midweek, Shane Baptiste's Woodford Town side bounced back in style with a 2-0 win on the road at Benfleet, making it back-to-back wins in the Essex Senior League for the first time this season, as we now look to climb the table following our exits from all FA competitions.
From the get-go at Woodside Stadium, it was The Woods who had full control, but they would have to wait until first-half stoppage time to find a breakthrough. Making his first start since the score-draw at Romford in August, Emmanuel Sergio thought he had put Woodford ahead on the brink of half-time, only to be denied by the hand of defender Matthew Stevens-Brown on the line, resulting in our hosts dropping down to ten men and conceding a penalty. Up-stepped Ollie Sotoyinbo, who calmly slotted the spot-kick into the corner to notch his sixth goal in his last three appearances!
With a man and goal advantage, we dominated possession for the majority of the second half, but failed to find a second, which would have all but sealed the three points at an incredibly tricky place to go, with The Woods winning just one of their three previous visits to Woodside Stadium. But as the clock ran down, Sotoyinbo was involved again, this time teeing up Marko Protic after he was released in behind, and our number ten kept his cool to fire into the bottom corner and confirm that the three points would head back down the A13 to Ashton's!
