Jamie and Tucker O'Donoghue's first week at the Interim helm of the Club has so far proved to be an incredibly frustrating one. For the third game in a row, The Woods have dominated but been made to rue missed chances and undone themselves with mistakes in defence. That was again the case on Tuesday night at Scraley Road.
Both goalkeepers were called into action to make relatively routine stops in the opening 25 minutes, but it was Heybridge Swifts who broke the deadlock with 27 minutes on the clock, as Wesley Santos finished a superb solo run by firing a curling effort into the bottom corner. Just 12 minutes later, the hosts doubled their advantage as Ben Search's cross evaded everyone and nestled into the back of the net, with Sidi Haidara left kicking himself for failing to deal with the delivery. 2-0.
Josh Grantham was replaced at the interval, with a tactical switch seeing The Woods revert back to a three at the back, a system that has become the norm since the O'Donoghue's took charge. Their prowess seemed to make a world of difference, with the visitors beginning on the front foot. Mike Agboola's flick-on from a free-kick found Marko Protic in the six-yard box, but his close-range effort was remarkably saved by Callum Chafer, before our number ten fired wide after being teed-up on the edge of the box.
Just shy of the hour mark, a moment of individual brilliance from Micah Jackson saw The Woods claw themselves back into the contest. He received a threaded Protic pass on the turn before arrowing a driven effort into the far corner to halve the deficit, and give the travelling Woodford fans something worth celebrating for the first time in over 400 minutes of football.
Despite further good opportunities, with Protic missing a one-on-one and substitute Uko Oji seeing a header blazed over, it wasn't enough to produce a memorable comeback on the road, as Swifts prayed for the final whistle by trying to keep the ball in the corner for the final minutes of added time. Scott Mitchell was shown a straight red card in the dying stages, seemingly for dissent after the referee stopped play, rubbing more salt in the wounds of The Woods who are now winless in five.
Starting XI: Haidara (GK); Kirwan-Meade (C), Agboola, Mitchell, Martins; Lawal, Kebi, Grantham (Costa-Campbell - 46'); Jackson (Von Herkomer - 84'), Leeds (Oji - 60'), Protic.
