Looking to make it back-to-back victories in the space of four days, Woodford Town travelled to Hulbridge Sports, a side who had won just once in their previous five league outings, and now under the guidance of Under-18 Manager Sam Ayres and 17-year-old Hayden Thwaites.
Despite a cagey first quarter of an hour, The Woods eventually settled into the contest, and on the 25-minute mark, took the lead through Marko Protic - our number eleven deputising up-front in the absence of Ollie Sotoyinbo, who was withdrawn in the 60th-minute during the midweek win over Erith and Belvedere in the London FA Senior Cup. Miles Mitchell-Nelson sprayed a lovely ball in behind the full back for David Gokou to run onto, with the winger cutting inside and feeding Protic, who finished clinically.
And shortly before the break, it was two! Malaki Toussaint's corner went all the way in, with the Sports' number one flapping at the ball under pressure from Mike Agboola and James Jewers, and despite the former attempting to claim he got the final touch, video review has ruled that it was indeed Toussaint who notched his second of the season!
Dimi Christou came off the bench at the interval, replacing our second goalscorer, and brought some attacking control in the final third, which benefited The Woods, whilst Jibran Ahmed, who was a 13th-minute substitute, replacing the injured Pedro Carvalho, was causing chaos down the right. It was Ahmed - who was also Wednesday night's late hero in the cup - who played a major part in our third, as he twisted and turned past former Wood Kai Peters, with the full back bringing him down inside the penalty area. Protic, with his last kick of the afternoon, stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick and put the game out of sight of the hosts, before he was replaced by Yemi Adelani!
With the game now put the bed, the icing on the cake came less than three minutes later with a devastating counter-attack. Sam Owusu was unleashed down the right wing and drove forward, picking out Gokou at the far post with his low cross, and our number seven will struggle to find an easier goal in his career, tapping into the empty net from around six yards out.
The victory sends Shane Baptiste's side above Barking and into third, ahead of December, which looks to be a pivotal month with the visits of Great Wakering Rovers, SOUL Tower Hamlets and Halstead Town to the Ashton's and the short trip to rivals Buckhurst Hill.
