MATCH REPORT | Romford 1-1 Woodford Town

Harrison Nathan

The Woods were held by Romford on Tuesday night.

Despite a dominant performance that came with plenty of chances, Shane Baptiste's Woodford Town had to settle for a point at the Lawtech Stadium on Tuesday against a Romford side that proved too resolute for The Woods.

The story of the match

The opening stages of the affair were incredibly cagey, but it was the home side who struck first on the break, as Fabio Vieira broke the offside trap and raced through on goal, finishing under the onrushing Sidi Haidara. It was the only real clear-cut chance that Boro had throughout the ninety minutes, but they punished us for our slow start and at the interval, headed in with a one-goal lead despite us having plenty of chances to equalise.

Kahlil Kirwan-Meade flashed an effort wide, whilst Solomon Ofori and James Runham saw goal-bound shots blocked by the Romford defence. But the half-time switch which saw Uko Oji replace Runham proved to be a tactical masterstroke by Shane Baptiste, with his side reaping an immediate reward.

Oji linked up brilliantly with Emmanuel Sergio down the left, releasing our winger who drove towards the byline. Marko Protic's run from deep was not countered, and with Sergio able to pick out our number ten with a low cross, he had the easy job of applying the finishing touch to a great move. 1-1.

We took confidence from the equaliser and pushed on to take all three points back to Woodford with us, but our efforts were short-lived, as Romford held strong. Moments after levelling, Oji had a goal ruled out for the softest of touches on his marker, before he fired over on the half-volley with minutes to spare. Previous to that, he saw an effort blocked as we camped inside the hosts' half. In the dying moments, Andre Anderson broke loose in behind, but Conor Beattie stood tall and denied the substitute, with debutant Tanel Ayvaz firing over on the rebound.

Despite controlling possession and having the majority of the game's chances, it was a point apiece for the two sides, who continue their unbeaten starts to the season.
