MATCH REPORT | Woodford Town 0-2 Benfleet

Harrison Nathan26 Feb - 13:17

The Woods were left to rue missed chances on Wednesday night.

After what was initially a scrappy start to the game, we finally clicked into gear after a quarter of an hour, however, despite our intense domination, we struggled to find a way past the excellent Florian Gislette in the Benfleet goal, and were made to pay for our missed chances late on.

With fifteen on the clock, our first chance fell to Marko Protic after an inch-perfect lobbed through ball by Miles Mitchell-Nelson, but our number eleven saw his effort squeeze just inches past the post, and Protic was in the thick of it again just a matter of moments later, but was unable to convert his header from a Myles Weekes cross.

Heading into the interval on level terms, our structure and momentum continued into the second half, with our first chance coming after less than a minute of play. Ollie Sotoyinbo was slipped through, but Gislette was equal to it, producing a brilliant save to keep us out. A sign of what was to come in the dying stages soon followed, as Benfleet threatened us on the counter-attack, calling Jake Boxer into action, including a brilliant double-save from the 18-year-old.

But The Woods were not to be deterred by the Benfleet chances, with Micah Jackson having a long-range effort saved before Sotoyinbo fired a header over. As we looked to make the pressure pay off, Rob Gammons turned his attention to the substitutes' bench on the hour mark, and Kye Scott almost made an immediate impact. A ball across the face of the goal caused havoc, with Gislette producing a wonderful stop to deny Scott. The attacker then reacted to the rebound, but was seemingly brought down before he was able to punish, with the ball falling to Andre Anderson, who was also denied by the Benfleet number one.

As we approached the final ten minutes of the ninety, Gislette produced his best stop of the night, diving at full-stretch to direct a close-range Kye Scott effort onto the crossbar with his fingertips, a truly remarkable save as Woodford's struggles in breaking down Benfleet's brick wall continued.

But, in the 85th-minute, Aaron Akoman was released through on goal, and he made no mistake in putting the visitors 1-0 up, before he stunned Ashton's for a second time in stoppage time, sealing all three points for Benfleet as they play catch-up to the rest of the league in their pursuit of the play-offs.
