Ashton's Stadium was the place to be on Wednesday night, with The Woods leaving it until the dying embers to secure a pivotal victory and set up a home tie with Sky Bet League One side AFC Wimbledon in the Third Round!
Erith and Belvedere started the affair on top and came close to opening the scoring with just three minutes on the clock, as Freddie Baker dragged an effort wide of Manny Agboola's goal from inside the penalty area. But, that gave The Woods fuel to improve, and they began to dominate. Marko Protic had a strike from the edge of the area saved, before visiting goalkeeper Charlie Cottrell was called into action to make a flying save, keeping out a header from his own defender via a Pedro Carvalho free-kick.
Myles John came inches away from breaking the deadlock with a rocketing strike from 25 yards out, before Protic saw a header from a looping Miles Mitchell-Nelson cross go over the bar. Despite a dominant spell from the hosts, the two sides entered the break on level terms, and the majority of the second half followed the same pattern, with Shane Baptiste's side dominating but unable to find the breakthrough.
The tempo changed, however, as the clock kept ticking, and with a penalty shootout looming, Woodford ramped up their dominance. Substitute Jibran Ahmed looked to have been brought down inside the six-yard box, but the man in the middle waved the appeals away, yet, it was our numbr fifteen who provided a magical moment as the clock struck ninety. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, he played a one-two with fellow substitute Dimi Christou, before cutting back and curling a wonderful effort into the top corner to smash the deadlock and put us 1-0 up!
And with the visitors now chasing for a way back into the contest, space began to open up in added time. David Gokou won the ball back on the edge of The Deres' box, before crossing into the path of Ahmed to grab his brace on the volley and seal the win!
