Professional opposition in an AFC Wimbledon XI proved too much for Rob Gammons' side on Wednesday night, as they pulled away from The Woods in the final phase of the game, knocking us out of the London FA Senior Cup at the Third Round stage in the process. The two sides proved to be a complete antithesis of each other, with the full-time schedule of The Wombles proving to be the difference between our players, who juggle work and their personal lives with playing.
The Woods began the tie on the front foot, with the backing of 442 fans making a tremendous atmosphere at Ashton's throughout the night. Jibran Ahmed was causing issues down the left, and Marko Protic squandered a golden opportunity, firing over with a free header from inside the six-yard box within the first quarter of an hour. Further chances saw Denzel Effah hit the crossbar, before Protic had another chance, this time one-on-one, but saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Charlie Fletcher.
Wimbledon's best chance of the half so far fell in the 26th-minute, as Isaac Ekpenyong scraped the crossbar with a right-footed effort, but we combated their efforts to take the lead instantly. Luke Steele's free header went wide, but with 32 minutes on the clock, Jibran Ahmed struck! The winger snuck in behind the visitors' defence, rounded Fletcher and finished into an empty net to give us a 1-0 lead.
Despite being the better of the two sides and having further opportunities to double our lead, we were pegged back before the break. A foul inside the area saw referee Alistair Potter point the spot, with Dwayne Campbell, who was a standout on the night, stepping up to dispatch confidently.
A quiet start to the second half ensued, but it would be The Dons who changed the narrative of the game - they took the lead against the run of play, through a fabulous Isaac Ekpenyong finish, as he cut in from the right and curled an effort past Martin Arnauchkov, who had been unbeatable from open-play in the first hour.
The League One side taking the lead didn't deter us from attempting to fightback, with Sam Owusu seeing a deflected effort saved after we were gifted a chance. The Skipper's long throws were also causing concern for the away side, and finally, the pressure paid off. After a succession of throw-ins, one was cleared only as far as Malaki Toussaint on the edge of the area, his effort struck the bar but Mike Agboola was alert to the situation, and bundled the ball over the line to draw us level! Our number 22 netted his second goal in as many games, and his third goal of the season, with all three coming in cup competitions.
However, this is where the story of the game completely changed. Eight minutes after we equalised, Dons' skipper Amaary Sealey got in behind our defence, latching onto a perfect through ball and sending an effort over Arnauchkov and into the top corner. Despite heavy appeals for offside, the flag remained down and the visitors took the lead. And just two minutes later, it was four. Substitute Tom Carvalho-Norris came off the bench and fired home in perfect fashion as he found the corner, giving the visitors a two-goal cushion. Ekpenyong put the tie to bed in the final moments of the ninety, with another curling strike into the bottom corner, this time cutting in from the left-hand side of the penalty area.
