Following the conclusion of our Emirates FA Cup Third Qualifying Round with St Albans City on Saturday, we caught up with Manager Shane Baptiste for an overview on our Emirates FA Cup run, the match and an outlook on the remainder of our season.
The Woods fell to a 1-0 defeat against a higher-division opponent with Harrison Smith's 11th-minute penalty being the only deciding factor, but the Boss, albeit disappointed with the result, was proud of his side's FA Cup journey and performance at Ashton's on Saturday.
On the proudness of our FA Cup run
"Of course [he is proud]. I would like to say a massive thank you to our fans for their support. It's been a good emotional rollercoaster in the FA Cup, but I'm disappointed that we haven't progressed. We had a tactical plan today, we did a lot of research on them, we knew there were parts of their game which we could exploit, and some of that came out today.
"I felt that when the game was in the balance, we were winning the 50-50s at times, but defensively, they were good. That's us facing a team at a higher level, and it comes down to small margins. We conceded the penalty, they went 1-0 up, and we're up against a side with the quality of that level, and they protected the lead really well."
On the match itself
"During the first half, it suited them more than us. There were a lot of 50-50s, second balls and duels, but at half time I reminded the players, stick to our philosophy and our beliefs. Can we combine more in possession, get on the outside a bit more and look to play, give-and-goes, look to shoot more?
"We did that in the second half; we had opportunities but couldn't equalise. Credit to St Albans, they're a fantastic side, they did what they had to do, and I wish them the best in the next round."
On our expectations for the rest of the season
"I have said to the players all along, the FA Cup is the holiday, the league is our 9-5, that is our reality. Like anyone, you're not going to prioritise their holiday over their job. What we can take out of it, though, is that it's a great opportunity and it gives belief to the players to achieve our goals."
