THE SIT DOWN #6 | Manny Agboola rolls back the years

Harrison Nathan23 Oct - 08:00

We sat down with goalkeeper Manny Agboola for a chat about all things Woodford Town and being the man in between the sticks.

Manny Agboola joins us for the latest edition of The Sit Down, as we disucssed a range of topics, stemming from an insight into his busy start to the season, to exactly how his goalkeeping journey began

It’s been a gruelling start to the season with so many games already played, how have you adjusted to ensure you’re ready for each challenge as it comes?

The Woods have already played 23 competitive games so far this season, before the end of October, with almost every week being taken up by two fixtures, partly due to the brilliant progress we made in the Emirates FA Cup, which saw us reach the Third Qualifying Round before losing respectfully to Step Three side St Albans City.

Manny has featured in fifteen games, and despite missing our last four with injury, it is still an obscene amount of minutes for this early stage of the season. Our goalkeeper has shared how he has been helping his body through the tough fixture schedule.

"I’ve just had to add more gym and recovery sessions to my week. It’s important to prepare correctly and recover properly after every game in order to be ready for the next one."

Just how good is the quality in the changing room right now? Is it enough to see us achieve our goals?

"We’ve got bundles of quality in the changing room, everyone in the team is more than capable of playing a league or two higher. With the quality we have, we’re more than capable enough to reach our goals this season. But nothing is ever given out for free, so as long as we continue to work hard and keep our standards high, we won’t have any issues."

You’re footballing journey has seen you take a place on the bench in the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup, is there anything that could come close to that?

Rolling back the years, Manny was involved as a substitute for League One outfit Oxford United as they travelled to a Middlsbrough side who, at the time, were playing in the Premier League, Despite not coming on, it is a memory that he holds highly in his regard, but it was almost topped with Woodford Town this season, and still could be.

"It would have been a dream to reach the First Round Proper this season, but it’s back to reality and trying to win the league. That would definitely be up there."

You never originally started out as a goalkeeper, what was it that saw you take up the role in between the sticks?

"Yeah I started out as a centre-back. But I was a lazy child, so opted to put some gloves on and stop running around. Then I realised I was actually alright at diving about and stuck to it!"
